Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)
Women with very large breasts may suffer from multiple medical problems including
chronic neck and back pain, bra strap shoulder grooving and recurrent rashes under
their breasts. The breast reduction procedure removes fat, breast tissue, and skin,
making the breasts smaller, lighter, and firmer. It also reduces the size of the
areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The goal is to achieve smaller,
better-shaped breasts that are in proportion to your body.
There are a variety of techniques to reduce the size of the breast and each has
its own unique scar pattern. Your surgeon will work with you to determine the most
appropriate procedure for your breast shape. The operation is performed under a
general anesthetic and usually lasts two to four hours. Most patients are able to
go home the same day. Some patients will require surgical drains for one to two
days. Typically, patients require pain medications for one week and have returned
to work and most daily activities within two weeks. We will ask you to refrain from
heavy lifting and exercise for six weeks following your surgery.
