Liposuction

Liposuction, which is also known as “lipoplasty” or “suction lipectomy", can be used to contour and remove unwanted fat from multiple areas of the body including: the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. A number of new techniques, including ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL), the tumescent technique, and the super-wet technique are available and your Plastic Surgeon will work with you to decide the most appropriate method for your body.

The best candidates for liposuction are those who are close to their ideal body weight, but have localized areas of fat they are unable to lose with diet and exercise. Your age is not a significant consideration, but older patients may have decreased skin elasticity and may not obtain the same results as younger patients with tighter skin. It is important that you discuss your expectations with your surgeon and the two of you have a mutual understanding of the results that can realistically be achieved.

The procedure is performed under a general anesthetic and most patients can go home the same day. If multiple procedures or large volume liposuction is planned, patients often are admitted to the hospital overnight for observation. The surgery typically takes two to four hours depending on the number of sites treated. You will awaken with a compression garment on and will need to wear it for three to six weeks. Most patients require pain medications for approximately one week and have returned to work and most daily activities within two weeks. It is important to realize that you will become swollen two to three days after your surgery and it may take several weeks for the swelling to resolve.
