Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
The face is the first thing people notice when we interact with them. Our ears are
rarely noticed unless they are overly large or protrude out from the head. When
that is the case it can be a great psychological strain and social impediment. Plastic
surgery of the ear or Otoplasty is the procedure that is done to improve this situation.
An Otoplasty can be done at any time into adulthood or often on children once their
ears are fully grown, usually by the age of 6 – 7 years. The scars from Otoplasty
are well hidden on the back side of the ear. The procedure is usually performed
with the patient asleep under a general anesthetic and takes about 2 – 3 hours to
treat both ears. The patient can usually go home the same day after the surgery
with a protective head dressing to safeguard the ears. After a few days, this is
removed and replaced by a stretchy headband garment that is generally worn for several
more weeks.
