Restylane and Perlane are cosmetic dermal fillers made of non-animal based hyaluronic acid. Restylane/Perlane were approved by the FDA in 2003 for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds including nasolabial folds, the lines between the nose and mouth. Upon being injected beneath the skin's surface, the gel adds natural volume and lift to smooth wrinkles and folds. These dermal fillers integrate into dermal tissue then attract and bind to water molecules to help maintain volume. Restylane and Perlane are gradually degraded by the body's own mechanisms and disappear without any residue. Results can be seen immediately following treatment and last six months, or longer.

Unlike bovine (cow) collagen, no skin testing is necessary prior to injection. Although results may vary, Restalyne usually works for 3-6 months. Treatment sessions usually take 5-15 minutes. Numbing cream and sometimes local anesthesia are utilized to minimize treatment discomfort.
