Even a small amount of extra fat in the upper neck area may cause the appearance of a "double chin." This appearance is bothersome for both men and women. The excess pockets of fat beneath the chin (the submental area) may be caused by aging, weight fluctuations, or genetics and can lead to a weaker chin and jawline, which creates an undefined profile. To address these issues, our skilled team of plastic surgeons and injector nurses are pleased to offer a new method to eliminate neck fat at Aesthetic Surgery Centre & MedSpa in Tacoma, WA. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Kybella is the first nonsurgical procedure for the removal of submental fat. The active ingredient in Kybella is a manmade version of deoxycholic acid that acts similar to the natural DA in your body. This allows it to break down and absorb fat. Once Kybella is injected below the chin, you may see a noticeable reduction in the volume of fat. When the fat is eliminated, the cells do not reform so you will be able to enjoy your new slimmer profile and clear jawline for years to come so long as you adhere to a healthy diet and lifestyle.
The best patients for Kybella treatments are those who possess additional fat in the upper neck (submental area) that causes unwanted fullness or a double chin effect. This advanced injection addresses stubborn sections of fat that cannot be minimized with usual weight loss methods due to genetics, aging, or other conditions. If you are at or near a healthy weight, but diet and exercise have not worked to remove the fat in your neck, Kybella may be the solution for you. While this injectable addresses small to moderate amounts of fat in the submental area, larger amounts of fat may require surgical liposuction at Aesthetic Surgery Centre & MedSpa.
Kybella is completed during an in-office appointment at our office. We will generally apply a numbing cream to the treated area, if preferred, after the skin is cleansed. The procedure takes about 15 – 20 minutes on average, which consists of multiple small injections that target the submental area. Some patients may require one treatment to achieve their desired goal while others could need several spaced at about 3 – 4 weeks apart.
Kybella treatments do not require anesthesia so you can leave the office as soon as you feel comfortable to resume your usual activities. You may experience temporary bruising, numbness, or swelling beneath your chin. This, however, should not last longer than 2 – 3 days. Call Aesthetic Surgery Centre & MedSpa immediately if you are feeling any unusual side effects, like facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or if your smile is uneven. While the fat cells that are destroyed do not return, the cells that remain can get larger so you must maintain a steady weight after your Kybella injections to prevent new pockets of fat from forming. Optimal results following this treatment leave your neck looking sleeker and tighter. Your profile will be more defined as well.
How much does Kybella cost?
Your costs for Kybella will depend on the number of sessions you need. During your consultation, a customized Kybella treatment plan will be developed to fit your budget and goals. A team member can also talk about payment options with you during your consultation.
How does Kybella work?
The active ingredient in Kybella, deoxycholic acid, works to break down fat cells in the submental area. After they are destroyed, these cells will not grow back. Therefore, additional treatments should not be necessary once you have finished.
Can Kybella be used to treat other areas of the body?
Currently, Kybella can only be used to treat the submental area. Kybella has been proven to effectively reduce the look of a double chin. Kybella hasn't been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use on any other areas of the body.
Am I eligible for a Kybella treatment?
There are a few factors that could make you ineligible to receive a Kybella treatment. You must be over the age of 18 years old, not pregnant or breastfeeding, and you cannot have any infection at the treatment site. Prior to the procedure is performed, you should share any health concerns and your medical history with your injector so they can decide if you can safely receive the treatment.
How many treatment sessions will I need?
In your consultation, a customized Kybella treatment plan will be developed to meet your needs. Typically, patients receive between 2 – 4 treatments before achieving their goals. Kybella injections must also be spaced about one month apart. You should not get more than six treatments.
