Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), also known as thyroid orbitopathy or Graves' Eye Disease, is a condition that is common among patients with an overactive thyroid. Thyroid Eye Disease is an immune system disorder that attacks the thyroid gland and causes the production of too many thyroid hormones, resulting in swelling or bulging around the eyes. At Aesthetic Surgery Center & MedSpa in Tacoma, Federal Way and Puyallup, our team is proud to offer the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. We utilize TEPEZZA® to help patients find relief from Thyroid Eye Disease, so they can get back to enjoying life and worrying less about TED. Many patients with Thyroid Eye Disease already know they have a thyroid disorder, but sometimes these symptoms are the first they learn of a thyroid disorder. TED is an autoimmune disorder that attacks the fat, muscle, and other tissues around the eye and usually shows up around age 45 but can present sooner. Those with Grave's disease aren't automatically going to get Thyroid Eye Disease; however, the two do tend to show up around the same time. If you have Grave's disease and you are a smoker, a female, or have certain genetic factors, you may be at greater risk of getting TED.
The most common sign of Thyroid Eye Disease is bulging of the eyes. You'll likely also notice a puffy appearance around the eyes, blurry vision, pain, redness around the eyes, dry skin around the eyes, sensitivity to bright lights, and difficulty closing or moving your eyes. In more severe cases, this disease could lead to inflammation that can damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss. Getting the help of a physician who is familiar with TED is vital to manage your symptoms and prevent life-long damage.
At Aesthetic Surgery Centre & MedSpa, we are proud to diagnose and treat Thyroid Eye Disease utilizing some of today's latest technologies. When you visit one of our Washington State offices, we will review your condition and health history to determine if you have Thyroid Eye Disease. Once it's determined that you would benefit from treatment, we will likely offer TEPEZZA as a solution for Thyroid Eye Disease. This IV (intravenous) medication is given through a needle in the arm. This treatment includes eight infusions, one every three weeks. Your appointment will last 60 – 90 depending on where you're at in your infusion regimen. During your treatment, we'll have you relax comfortably in one of our private treatment areas while you read, watch television, or enjoy another light activity to pass the time. Our team will work with you to ensure you're comfortable and feel well cared for during treatment. Many of our patients begin to notice a change in symptoms after two treatments; however, it is vital to receive all eight treatments for TEPEZZA to remain effective.
Can Thyroid Eye Disease cause blindness?
While Thyroid Eye Disease can cause blindness, it's rare. Many of our patients only have mild symptoms; however, about 3 – 5 % of patients develop serious problems with TED, which may include vision loss.
Can you prevent Thyroid Eye Disease?
There is typically nothing you can do to prevent Thyroid Eye Disease. If you develop the disease, treatment can help treat the disease.
Can I have TEPEZZA treatments if I'm pregnant?
If you are pregnant or nursing, please let our team know right away, as this may not be an effective solution for you. We may suggest until after you are completed nursing or have your baby before beginning these treatments.
